Getting your NIE: the basics
7/6/2026
What is the NIE?
The NIE is a tax identification number assigned to foreigners in Spain. You will be asked for it constantly — opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, buying a car, registering self-employment, and more.
Do you need one?
If you plan to stay in Spain for more than a short holiday, work, buy property, or open a bank account, you will need an NIE sooner rather than later.
How to get it
There are two common routes:
- From your home country, at the Spanish consulate, before you move.
- From within Spain, via the Oficina de Extranjería or certain police stations, by appointment (cita previa).
Appointments in the Benidorm/Alicante area can book up weeks in advance — request one as early as possible.
What you will typically need
- Passport (original + copy)
- Completed EX-15 form
- A stated reason for requesting the NIE
- Proof of address, if applying from within Spain
This is general information, not personalized legal advice. Requirements and appointment systems change — always confirm current steps with the Oficina de Extranjería or a qualified professional before you rely on this for your own situation.
