Terms & Conditions

1. Who we are

Benidorm Expats ("we", "us", "the community") is a community platform connecting expats, travellers, and residents in Benidorm, Spain, through events, a member directory, and shared local information. This website (benidormexpats.com) is run on a volunteer basis.

2. Acceptance of these terms

By creating an account or using this website, you agree to these Terms & Conditions. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.

3. Who can use this

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. By registering, you confirm that the information you provide is accurate.

4. Your account

  • You're responsible for keeping your login secure.
  • One account per person. Don't create accounts to impersonate someone else or to evade a ban.
  • We may suspend or delete accounts that violate these terms, harass other members, post inappropriate content, or misuse the platform.

5. Events

  • Events listed on this site may be organized by our team or by other members.
  • We do our best to keep event information accurate, but we are not responsible for what happens at in-person meetups, including but not limited to injuries, disputes between attendees, cancellations, or changes made by organizers.
  • Attend events at your own judgement and risk, as you would any public gathering.
  • Anyone creating an event is responsible for the accuracy of what they post and for behaving appropriately toward attendees.

6. Community conduct

When using this site, don't:

  • Harass, threaten, or discriminate against other members
  • Post false, misleading, or offensive content
  • Use the platform for spam, scams, or commercial solicitation without permission
  • Upload images or content that are illegal, sexually explicit, or violate someone else's rights

We may remove content or restrict accounts that break these rules, at our discretion.

7. Content you post

You keep ownership of what you post (profile info, photos, messages, event descriptions). By posting it, you allow us to display it on the platform as intended (e.g., showing your profile to other members, showing event details publicly). Don't post anything you don't have the right to share.

8. Data processing (Privacy)

We process personal data in line with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Spanish data protection law.

What we collect: name, email, profile details you choose to add (bio, age range, gender, languages, interests, area, profile photo), event and RSVP activity, and messages you send through the platform.

Why we process it:

  • To operate your account and show your profile to other members (where you've chosen to make it public)
  • To let you sign up for events and connect with other members
  • To send you notifications about events or messages, if you've opted in
  • To moderate content and keep the community safe (e.g., automated checks on uploaded photos)

Legal basis: performance of a contract (running your account), consent (optional notifications, public profile visibility), and legitimate interest (community safety and moderation).

Who we share it with: we use third-party service providers to run the platform, including hosting/database (Supabase, EU-based), email delivery (Resend), and automated image-safety checks (Google Cloud Vision). These providers only process data on our instructions. We don't sell your data to anyone.

How long we keep it: for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we deactivate it and hide it from the community immediately; underlying data is fully removed or anonymized within a reasonable period afterward, except where we're required to keep records by law.

Your rights: you can access, correct, or delete your data, object to processing, or ask for a copy of it, at any time — most of this you can do yourself from your profile settings, or by contacting us (see below). You also have the right to complain to the Spanish data protection authority (AEPD) if you think we've mishandled your data.

9. Limitation of liability

This platform is provided "as is," run by volunteers. To the extent permitted by law, we're not liable for indirect damages, loss of data, or issues arising from third-party content, links, or in-person events.

10. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll let members know via the site or WhatsApp group.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by Spanish law. Any disputes will be handled by the courts of Alicante, Spain.

12. Contact
